ConceptEducation

People learn by working on the projects. Academy is the places where that happens, starting with one makerspace.

Promoted to its own page: it has lived inside Manufacturing as the talent layer since the thesis. The active build is still Manufacturing.

What it is

Academy is Moduloa’s teaching arm made physical: spaces where people learn by building, not by watching. It has been on the record since the thesis (Moduloa Academy is the talent layer, the sixth row of the model table), and it becomes its own project here because every shelf on the index will need it, not just the flagship.

The first space

It starts with one location, a makerspace or something like it. Publishing it is part of the plan: a space that is not visible does not get found, and does not get joined. From one working space, more follow: around the world, each anchored to real work rather than a curriculum written in advance.

The shape

Many disciplines, one method

01 · One discipline per shelfThe projects on the index are not one trade. Manufacturing needs machinists and production technologists; Trace needs field electronics; Matrix needs machine operators; Saga and Weave need designers. Each discipline gets an academy floor, not a lecture series.
02 · Work on the real thingAn academy space works on the live projects and the thesis itself. The exercises are the actual backlog: build the next jig, test the next reader, sew the next sample. Learning is a by-product of the work being real.
03 · Open in both directionsThe academy is expected to push back: to challenge the thesis and to suggest new projects. The index is not a fixed menu; it grows in whichever direction the people doing the work prove out.
Prior art

Learn-by-building already has institutions, and one of them publishes where it leaks

Three models are worth reading before anyone builds a fourth. None is a blank page, and the Norwegian one publishes the completion numbers that show the cost.

01 · Fab Labs: a charter, not a franchiseThe Fab Foundation puts its network at 90-plus or 100 countries and between 1,500 and 1,750 labs: its own page carries both pairs of figures, so neither is a measurement. Membership is four conditions, not a fee: public access at least part of each week, a common tool set, network participation, and signing the Fab Charter, which says commercial activity “should grow beyond rather than within the lab.” Read plainly, that clause is a model not trying to become a factory; the charter does not say so in those words.
02 · Germany’s dual system: two venues, by lawTraining runs inside a company and a vocational school at once, across more than 300 occupations recognised under the Vocational Training Act, for two to three and a half years; around half of German school leavers take it. The load-bearing part is not pedagogy but codification: each training occupation has training regulations that “set out the contents of the respective training in detail,” and federal and state authorities harmonise through standing committees specifically “in order to avoid conflicts in training caused by different laws.”
03 · Norway’s lærlingordning: the constraint is who will take somebody onSchool first, then a period in a training firm, then the fagbrev. Utdanningsdirektoratet reports 48,400 apprentices on live contracts as of 1 October 2022, about 28,100 approved training firms across the 2021–22 school year, and 80.6% of applicants placed in 2022. The constraint sits in that last figure: capacity is however many firms will take somebody on, which is why a teaching space is only useful if it also has work that needs doing.
04 · Where the numbers get uncomfortableCompletion is the honest weak spot, and it needs stating precisely. Of pupils who started a vocational programme in 2013, Statistics Norway found 67.5% finished upper secondary within six years with either a vocational or an academic qualification: 49.1% among those who started restaurant and food subjects, 75.9% in electrical. Because it counts pupils who crossed over and finished academically, it is not a measure of the apprenticeship route, and SSB publishes no split between the two qualifications in that article. What the spread does show is that any claim about vocational education is really a claim about a particular subject.
The research that argues against us

The strongest counter-evidence is not that hands-on training fails; it is that it ages. Hanushek, Woessmann and Zhang, on adult-literacy micro data from 18 countries (NBER working paper, October 2011; published in the Journal of Human Resources 52(1), 48–87, in 2017), find that “any relative labor-market advantage of vocational education decreases with age,” sharpest in exactly the countries with the strongest apprenticeship systems. Early employment gets bought with later adaptability. The underlying survey was fielded between 1994 and 1998, so only the direction is safe to use, and that direction argues for teaching against a live, changing backlog rather than a fixed trade profile.

That the role becomes real and needed is a dated claim, not an assumption: P-14 on the record. The citation lives here rather than on /manufacturing, because this is where the role is actually argued.

Who is already in this space

Not an empty market, and claiming otherwise would be the first lie on this page. The ARM Institute, a US Manufacturing Innovation Institute with a 300-plus member consortium, endorses robotics training programmes against industry criteria. Fab Academy runs a five-month distributed programme plus a month of evaluations, whose certificates accumulate towards the Fab Diploma. And Norway already teaches the adjacent trade: Vg3 produksjonsteknikkfaget publishes competence aims for the in-company year.

What the curricula quietly assume

Read the aims, not the titles. That Norwegian curriculum asks a candidate to “tolke og bruke bedriftens kvalitetsstyringssystem,” to “registrere produksjonsdata i bedriftens produksjonsstyringssystem,” and to “utarbeide og bruke en produksjonsplan ut fra en produksjonsordre”: a quality system, a production system and an order that all already exist. Fab Academy, by its own description, teaches people to “envision, design and prototype.” Between the prototype and the line that repeats sits the work of standing a cell up from nothing, and neither end of that pair claims it. Weak claim by construction: an absence read off curriculum documents is not an absence measured by a survey, and we have not found a survey that measures it.

Why the demand side is credible anyway

The International Federation of Robotics counts 542,000 industrial robots installed in 2024 and 4,664,000 in operation worldwide. Cedefop finds that in 2024, 22 vocational occupations were in EU-wide shortage, metal and manufacturing among the most widespread. Nav’s 2026 employer survey estimates Norway short of 34,000 people, industrial work the second-largest gap at 5,750, its named occupations “typiske yrker som krever fagbrev.” Robots arriving and certificates going unfilled are two measurements, not one argument, but they point the same way.

The test a first space would have to pass

The test is narrow, and nothing here is scheduled. A space only opens if there is real backlog to work on and if someone qualified enough to correct the work is in the room. Fail either and it is a workshop with a curriculum, which the world already has in quantity.

Before the first space exists, Academy works the way everything here works: research, published. Because Academy is where the disciplines tie together, its journal is also where research about the organization itself belongs: how it reaches people, and what keeps its systems independent.

Why it belongs in Moduloa

The brand publishes its systems so people with more experience can examine, challenge, and build on them. Academy is that sentence made physical: the place where the documentation gets hands.
